Originally by: Anwyl I have to wonder which game you're referring to with HUGE backstories to all the little monsters. I have yet to find a game with any depth to random critters you fight beyond maybe a battle cry, the best you'll see is scripted events now and then in the form of them saying or doing something before fighting. Eve has this by the way and will be improving it in Kali from the sound of it (I don't know this for certain, but they certainly made it sound that way) So, they're on it! Just to strengthen my position, take a look at some other games, you'll be lucky if all your enemies' positions matter, usually due to lag they can change position rather violently, at least eve usually seems to have fairly consistant physics (usually). The only thing I think it's really missing is in depth agent missions with recurring characters and deep storylines, but really, that's pretty much impossible to do, and COSMOS is supposed to fill that niche. So let the devs do their job, they do it well, and eve is constantly improving, which is again more than I can say for other games I've played.
Did you ever play Everquest I.
It had tons of depth before it turned into a piece of crap once Sony got hold of it. I played that for a while.
The NPCS in that were quite good. One zone (solar system) had a day time peaceful atmosphere but at dusk it turned evil and dangerous and all the nps changed to much more dangerous types.
Many NPC had storys and multistage events that you would complete for them. Others had characteristics that made them interesting - goblins would run away when they got low health and then come back with a whole army of friends while others would fight you to the death.
You could build faction with certain KOS npcs so that they didnt kill you anymore and they would even protect you if you were attacked and allow you to access usually inaccessible npc storylines / quests.
Some boss (officer) npcs had special abilities and you had to use tactics to beat them and in many cases needed entire groups to defeat them. There were ongoing wars between npcs which you could manipulate to cause certain things to happen and spawn. And player assisted wars you could engage in if you were uber enough.
Compare that to our NPCS, that never talk, never become friendly, never change, never give storylines, never require more then 1 person to kill even the greatest and best of them.
Depth is what makes a game great and gives it longevity, not player politics which are for the most part unsophisticated smack and e-peening or regurgitated PvP that has the same flavour month after month.
Now before the fanbois come and string me up, I pay for EvE because it still offers something but it could be a much better and more popular game if the developers added some depth to it.
Sounds *horrible*. IMO AI (npcs) can never add the depth and gameplay of a real live person. Can an NPC hide from you? Run away? Sneak up on you? Actually outsmart you? No. This is what Eve provides. The opportunity to go toe to toe with real people, every day. And not just PVP. You can compete with people in the marketplace by trading, production, all sorts of stuff. Beating an NPC is meaningless. Beating a person has real psychological value to it.
To the OP: if all you think Eve is about are the boring backgrounds and lack of NPC content, you're completely missing the point.
Because I said so...
